Insights from Dom Conte - ‘Law + AI = Opportunity: How to Position Yourself for the Future’
Dom started as a solicitor at Hogan Lovells, and pivoted to legaltech, founding companies and applying generative AI to the real pain points of lawyers, relying on his previous experience in the industry. He helped build Avail as a founding team member and Chief Product Officer, and more recently co-founded Purple, a studio that partners with law firms to design and launch tech products.
We had the opportunity to sit down with Dom and ask him candidly about his opinion on legaltech as an expert in the field.
Original talk held on 07.10.2025.
Q. Where is the legal industry heading?
Toward the augmented lawyer — AI-assisted by default. Clients already use AI, so firms must adapt. Routine drafting work is fading, clients want collaboration, quick reviews, and integration into their systems. The future lawyer will focus on complex, high-value work and know how to manipulate AI effectively.
Q. How do you make tools people actually use?
Adoption is the biggest failure point. Dom’s rule: deliver value within 2 minutes. Lawyers must feel the benefit fast. So tools must focus on psychology and user experience, learning from gaming design like Mario Kart and Clash of Clans to make tools intuitive and ‘sticky’.
Q. Anything you wish you’d known from the start?
Law firms are just businesses - they have overheads, profits, and KPIs like any other company. Once you understand how they make and lose money, you can sell ideas better. To persuade partners, you must speak in their language - ROI, efficiency, profitability.
“The exciting thing about legal tech right now is that there are so few really good people in it, and the jobs are just everywhere.”
